What is an Authorized IRS E-File Provider?
An Authorized IRS E-File Provider is a business or organization that has fulfilled the necessary criteria and obtained approval to participate in the IRS e-file program. To become an Authorized IRS E-File Provider, you are required to apply for an Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN) and undergo a suitability check. Upon successful completion of the application process, you will receive a letter of acceptance that includes your EFIN."
What is an EFIN?
An Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN) is a unique identifier assigned by the IRS to firms that have completed the e-File application. This number is required for tax professionals who wish to file tax returns electronically.
How long does it take to get an EFIN?
It is recommended to initiate the EFIN process well in advance of the tax season, as it typically takes approximately 45 days to complete.
How to apply for an EFIN:
To become an Authorized IRS E-File Provider, it is necessary to submit an application for an Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN). Make sure to select electronic return originator (ERO). Once the application is completed, make an appointment for free fingerprints at a fingerprint center near you within the IRS e- services application process, a suitability check will be conducted. Following this, an EFIN will be provided online and a letter of acceptance will be issued, which will contain the EFIN.

It's important to note that the IRS conducts a suitability check on your firm and each individual listed on the application, which includes a credit check, a compliance check, a criminal background check, and a review of prior non-compliance with IRS e-file requirements.
